Poverty is now a fact in UK households consisting of the disabled, retired and unemployable.
A radical change to tax could help by abolishing basic rate tax and ramping up the tax on those earning twice the average income to rates ranging from 40% to 90%. This was done by Sweden without a sudden flight of the professionals from the country and instead encouraged those in the 90% band to opt for a shorter working week thereby making room for more professionals to take up jobs for the days freed up.
